Technical Advice Notes (TANs)
Technical advice notes (TANs) provide detailed planning advice.
Local planning authorities take them into account when they are preparing development plans.
- Extensions and Replacement Dwellings Technical Advice Note
This Technical Advice Note (TAN) has been produced to guide applicants and decision-makers in interpreting relevant policies in the South Downs Local Plan. It relates to proposals for domestic extensions, outbuildings and annexes, and to proposals for replacement dwellings.
The Local Plan should be read as a whole. However, this TAN has been produced specifically to assist in the interpretation of the following SDLP policies:
- Policy SD30: Replacement Dwellings
- Policy SD31: Extensions to existing dwellings, and provision of annexes and outbuildings
- Ecosystem Services Technical Advice Notes
These technical advice notes support South Downs Local Plan Policy SD2: Ecosystem Services. They explain what ecosystem services are, and how they apply to development proposals.
- Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA) Technical Advice Note
This Technical Advice Note (TAN) has been produced to provide guidance on how to undertake Habitats Regulations Assessment for development proposals in the South Downs National Park.
This TAN is a material consideration that will be taken into account by decision makers at the Authority when determining planning applications that have the potential to impact on international nature conservation designations. This document should be read alongside policies in the South Downs Local Plan.
- Dark Skies Technical Advice Note
This technical advice note supports South Downs Local Plan Policy SD8: Dark Night Skies. It provides developers and planners with information required to submit / assess lighting schemes which protect the South Downs International Dark Skies Reserve.
- Sustainable Construction Technical Advice Note
This Technical Advice Note (TAN) has now been replaced with a Sustainable Construction Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), adopted in Summer 2020.
- Development Briefs
The SDNPA has produced development briefs for four significant sites which have been identified as suitable for housing in the South Downs Local Plan policies SD64, SD81, SD82 and SD89.
The development briefs, which were all subject to public consultation in the Spring of 2018, set out how the Authority expects the sites to be developed and will provide guidance for any subsequent planning applications.
