Ecology and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)

Biodiversity Net Gain

Mandatory Biodiversity net gain (BNG) is an ambitious and world-leading government strategy to ensure that habitat for wildlife is in a measurably better state than it was before development. For the first time all habitats will be recognised in the planning system for their biodiversity value.

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) will be a statutory requirement for major developments from 12 February 2024, for minor development from 2 April and for Nationally Important Infrastructure Projects (NSIPS) from November 2025.

BNG requires developers to provide at least 110% of the biodiversity value found on the site prior to their development. BNG can be delivered either fully or in part through on-site habitat enhancement and creation, provision of off-site biodiversity units, or as a last resort, the purchase of statutory biodiversity credits. Created and enhanced habitat will be secured for a minimum of 30 years.

You will need to understand the requirements of BNG if you’re a developer or a land manager wanting to sell in the BNG market.

You can find out more about BNG on the Government’s website.
