The South Downs National Park has been a place of worship and inspiration for centuries and still makes a real connection with those who spend time here today.

Pick a summer’s day for a modern pilgrimage up onto the ridge of the chalk escarpment at ancient Chanctonbury Ring. Whilst likely an Iron Age hillfort, legend tells of a Roman temple on the site and the place is alive with Sussex superstitions about witches and the Devil. If you make the climb up from Washington you’ll get a flavour of why this place garners such legend, the views out from the shade of the crown of trees down onto the Weald are nothing short of magical.
