For something more medieval, swing by Lewes Priory, site of the battle of Lewes where Simon de Montfort defeated Henry III in 1264. You’ll discover evocative ruins and a stunning memorial to the battle.
Take a short detour from the South Downs Way at Kithurst Hill to uncover the unusual sight of an old WWII Churchill tank, riddled with bullet holes. A reminder of the importance of the South Downs as a training area during the Second World War.
