We depend on the hundreds of wonderful people who give up their spare time to carry out volunteer conservation work on the South Downs.  This work is vital to our development.

Volunteers Hedge LayingThe South Downs Volunteer Ranger Service, which celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2011, currently contributes over 5000 workdays per year to looking after the South Downs.

There are many local conservation groups across the South Downs doing important work to protect and enhance the area’s unique landscape and precious wildlife. You can find their details listed on the Conservation Groups page.
