Update on proposals for Lewes bus station site

Update on proposals for Lewes bus station site

January 11, 2022

A pre-application for the site has been submitted to the Authority and details are available on our website planning portal by searching: SDNP/21/03284/PRE.

The National Park’s approved Local Plan allocates the site for redevelopment and the policy states that ‘alternative uses on the bus station site are subject to the facility being replaced by an operationally satisfactory and accessible site elsewhere’.

Discussions will continue at this pre-application stage with the various stakeholders and interested parties, but no formal planning application has yet been submitted for this site, nor any formal decisions made.

A meeting was held with interested parties, including local councillors from Lewes District Council and the Generator Group.

The actions agreed by the South Downs National Park Authority following the meeting are:

  • The Authority will work with the Generator Group to see if there are any opportunities for some elements of the bus station to be retained on the existing site within their proposals, having regard to the adopted Policies of the Lewes Neighbourhood Plan and Local Plan that went through a public examination.
  • The Authority will work with Lewes District Council, which oversees air quality management, to assess any potential impacts on air quality as a result of this proposal.
  • The Authority is happy to work with East Sussex County Council, the Generator Group, Lewes District Council and landowners to help identify the best location for the bus station.
