Truleigh Hill Local Landscape Plan

Truleigh Hill Local Landscape Plan

Since 2018, with funding from the Rampion 1 Wind Farm Community Fund the South Downs National Park Authority has been working with local people and visitors to develop a vision for Truleigh Hill-  a dramatic and breath-taking location on the South Downs.

Many people come to Truleigh Hill to enjoy the landscape. There are regular visitors from the urban areas around the National Park; users of the South Downs Way travelling the length of the SDNP and visitors to the Truleigh Hill Youth Hostel which is a key focus for the local community and provides rare facilities for visitors at the top of the Downs.

Unfortunately there are people pressures on this landscape which affect not only it’s character, wildlife and beauty but also how it is perceived, experienced and cared for.

It is hoped that by working collectively with local people, groups, organisations and visitors the landscape and natural beauty of Truleigh Hill can be reinvigorated and restored for both people and nature.

Background information and evidence

The Project Area

Truleigh Hill is home to one of the highest communities within the South Downs National Park.

It sits at 216 m above sea level north of Shoreham By Sea and is a key location on the South Downs Way National Trail (SDW).

The project area includes the wider landscape setting of Truleigh Hill and communities in the surrounding towns and villages and the settled coastal plain.

Partners and Stakeholders

We wanted to capture both the views and feedback from people familiar with Truleigh Hill and also to engage with those individuals and communities which may experience barriers to accessing and enjoying the area.

We also talked to the residents, and the business owners and farmers of Truleigh Hill to understand the day to day issues they experience in and around the project area.

Aims of the project

  • To retell and understand the recent history and evolution of Truleigh Hill and it’s value and place in the history of the South Downs.
  • Increase understanding and awareness about Truleigh Hill and how special it is for people and nature
  • To build consensus around a vision for Truleigh Hill with local people and the wide range of visitors and promote guardianship of the landscape
  • Identify ways to encourage behavior changes around anti-social activities and actions
  • Explain how the natural beauty of Truleigh Hill and it’s setting could be improved through new habitat creation and changes to landscape management methods and undertake a range of plantings and conservation activities to demonstrate this.
