Picnics

Picnics

Picnics are a quintessentially English past time to relax and take in the rolling landscape of the South Downs. Grab the camera, the children, a few outdoor games and head to a scenic picnic spot.

The open grounds and woodlands of the 17th century West Sussex estate of Petworth Park provide the perfect backdrop to an afternoon of summer lazing. After lunch you can follow in the footsteps of one of England’s most celebrated artists, JMW Turner, who created some of his best work by the views along the Turner Trail.

Why not try filling your basket with lots of local produce? These are some local favourites:

  • Arnold’s Condiments from Northchapel has condiments inspired by and featuring the fruits of the National Park
  • The Crafty Pint shop in Midhurst specialises in local beers, ciders, South Downs wine and soft drinks

Farmers markets throughout the South Downs provide mouth-watering produce to compliment your picnic. South Downs Food will help you discover farmers markets, vineyards and tantalising local food produced across the South Downs.
