Stedham: Dragonflies rest

Stedham: Dragonflies rest

Stedham and Iping common are home to all 5 of the heathland dragonfly species found in the south of the UK:

  • Golden- ringed
  • Emperor
  • Black Darter
  • Broad Bodied Chaser
  • Common Darter

Following a tour of the site with a Sussex Wildlife Trust ranger who spoke passionately about the importance of the insects to the commons at Iping and Stedham, the sculptor was inspired to create this piece.

The simple but elegant carved stone bench is inspired by the insects that live there and twist at either side in a manner similar to dragonfly wings. The seat is situated at a fork in the path and is designed to be used by dragonflies and humans alike.
