Open Space and Play Spaces

Open Space and Play Spaces

The draft South Downs Open Space Study has been prepared to:

  • Understand the quantitative deficits of open space and play space in settlements with proposed site allocations of more than 10 (Class C3) dwellings in the new South Downs Local Plan; and
  • Inform quantitative standards in Policy SDG3 of the new South Downs Local Plan for public open space, sports, and recreational facilities.

The draft study and interactive map can be found below:

As part of the draft study, the Authority has used the Fields in Trust (FIT) Benchmark Standards and a variety of data sources to identify and categorise open space and play space across the South Downs National Park in an interactive map.

This exercise has not included outdoor sports as information can be found in Local Authority Built Facilities and Playing Pitch Strategies, and other publicly available information.

The draft study and interactive map have a number of limitations (see Notice within the draft study). This includes time constraints which has meant the similarities and differences between the interactive map and the Natural England Green Infrastructure Framework (GIF) Mapping (Version 2.2) have not been explored further.

The Natural England GIF Mapping can be found here: https://designatedsites.naturalengland.org.uk/GreenInfrastructure/Map.aspx
