Matt Collins: Inspired by Wild Landscapes

Matt Collins is head gardener of the Garden Museum in London and a writer on gardening and travel, contributing to publications including The Guardian, The Times, RHS’s The Garden magazine and Gardens Illustrated. Reflecting on over a decade’s gardening at the Garden Museum — which celebrates the art, history and design of gardens and houses the tomb of the John Tradescants, 17th century plant hunting celebrities — Matt will discuss the influence of travel on gardening, and how seeing plants growing in their natural environments inspires his planting decisions and his writing. The Garden Museum’s courtyard garden was designed in response to the Tradescant tomb and features a palette of plants whose stories tell of plant collectors both historic and current. Matt is the author of Forest: Walking Among Trees (Pavilion Books). He wrote a regular feature for The Daily Telegraph which saw him travel to meet plants in their home landscapes, from the wild geraniums of Madeira to subalpine columbines in the Rocky Mountains. Most recently, he has developed a new dry, unwatered garden at the Garden Museum filled with plants inspired by travels that demonstrate resilience in the face of our changing climate and recurrent heatwaves. Join Matt for this fascinating evening talk taking place in our 16th century barn, also known as the Field Studies Centre. A bar serving wine and soft drinks will be available on the evening.
