Monday 18 July – Cool Coast
Even though coastline makes up a small percentage of the South Downs National Park, it is a significant feature of the landscape.
The 14-mile stretch between Eastbourne and Seaford Head remains one of the best undeveloped lengths of coastline in the UK, taking in Beachy Head, Birling Gap, Seven Sisters Country Park and Hope Gap, at the foot of Seaford Head.
But, this part of the coast has been a home for people for a vast period of time, with hillforts, burial mounds and even a thriving medieval village, now remnants of this past cultural legacy.
Unfortunately, due to the effects of coastal erosion, accelerated by climate change, this section of the National Park is likely to change dramatically in the coming years, with unpredictable cliff fall occurring more often.
