Let’s talk loneliness – five ways the National Park can help

June 17, 2019

Feeling lonely or isolated can affect anyone, at any age.

For decades there’s been a stigma attached to this basic human emotion, but the tide seems to be turning with people now talking far more openly about their mental health and well-being.

The statistics are an eye-opener. There are 1.2 million chronically lonely older people in the UK and the number of over-50s experiencing loneliness is set to reach two million by 2025/6 (both Age UK studies).

And it’s not just older people. A study by The Co-op and the British Red Cross revealed over 9 million people in the UK across all adult ages – more than the population of London – are either always or often lonely.

Some studies even suggest that loneliness is worse for your health than obesity.

So, for Loneliness Awareness Week, we wanted to share five ways that the South Downs National Park can help if you’re feeling isolated or lonely. Our motto is this and always will be – the National Park welcomes all!

Join a ranger-led wildlife walk on the heaths

We have a series of free ranger-led heathland walks taking place throughout the summer. Find out more about the amazing wildlife (including lizards!) and enjoy a natter with other walkers. Find out more here: https://www.southdowns.gov.uk/care-for/heathland/heathlands-reunited/walks-talks

Enjoy a health walk

Wave Leisure Trust has teamed up with the South Downs National Park Authority to organise the “Walk The Downs” initiative. The walks start from Peacehaven, Newhaven and Seaford and then follow a route into the South Downs. A great way to meet new people and soak up some breathtaking views! The walks run until September. Booking is essential and can be arranged by contacting Luke from the Wave team on: 01323 408862 or email luke.greenwood@waveleisure.co.u

Ride the Downs

Cycling is a great way to get the endorphins flowing and meet new people. Cycle Seahaven have joined forces with the South Downs National Park for a series of regular, free guided rides until September. The project offers individuals, of all fitness levels, the opportunity to get involved in a progressive program designed to give the confidence to leave the car on the driveway in exchange for a healthy, environmentally friendly alternative. Join a conservation group

There are a plethora of voluntary groups across the South Downs National Park appealing to a range of interests, including wildlife, local history and landscapes. Find out more here https://www.southdowns.gov.uk/care-for/volunteering-2/conservation-groups
