Half-term Adventures in the South Downs
October 22, 2018
Looking for some fun ideas for enjoying the stunning October weather this half-term? The beautiful South Downs National Park is your playground so here are some suggestions for activities to help all the family get some fresh air…
1) Hunt for brightly coloured fungi
Visit the golden woodlands of Pulborough Brooks for a spot of fungi hunting and see what autumnal wildlife you can spot out on the wetlands.
2) Follow in the footsteps of Gilbert White
Gilbert White was a pioneering British naturalist who was heavily inspired by the South Downs. Follow in his footsteps and take in the figure of eight Gilbert White Literary Walk near his childhood home, near Selborne.
3) Wander the streets of historic Lewes
Explore one of the earliest Norman strongholds in England – Lewes Castle. Check out other Car-free days-out on our website too southdowns.gov.uk/go-southdowns
4) Get the wind in your hair
Conquer the challenging slopes, enjoy the exhilarating descents and drink in the breathtaking landscapes as you cycle part of the South Downs Way. There are lots of easier routes around the National Park too – https://www.southdowns.gov.uk/cycling
5) Explore the Heritage Coast
If the sea is your thing then take in the Heritage Coast walk along the South Downs Way enjoying the hugely impressive chalk cliffs and cliff top lighthouse at Beachy Head. Look inland across the gently rolling chalk downs and valley from the UK’s highest coastal point on the iconic Seven Sisters.
6) Discover the twisted and ancient yew trees at Kingley Vale
Kingley Vale, near Chichester, is home to some truly awesome ancient yew trees. Some are 2,000 years old and amongst the oldest living things in Britain! Imagine the stories they could tell if only they could talk…
7) Plan a walk
Pick up an ordnance survey map and plan a walk for the whole family. Use our online walking guides. If you’re looking for buggy or wheelchair friendly routes why not try one of our Miles without Stiles guides.
