Wines & Gentle Inclines

12 June 2026

9.30 to 13.00

A 5.7 mile vineyard walk. Summer is made for vineyard walks, and on this occasion, our local favourite is award-winning Upperton Vineyard just outside Petworth.

The route will lead us down to a beautiful and rarely seen stretch of the River Rother, where pike were once caught and kingfishers can occasionally be spotted perched on willow branches overhanging the water.

Along the way, we’ll also pass through a section of one of West Sussex’s best-known holloways, its sandstone sides worn away by centuries of passing feet, hooves, and wheels.

This walk also offers something of a “now or never” opportunity. Upperton, long known for its family-run charm and relaxed welcome, has recently been sold to Roebuck Estates, with the terrace bar and shop only open this summer until stocks run out (why we are getting in there early!).

As a result, this may be one of the last chances to experience the vineyard in its current form.

We’ll finish on the terrace, which enjoys sweeping views across the South Downs, with time to enjoy a glass of locally produced wine alongside our picnic lunch in a friendly and informal setting.

Well-behaved dogs on leads welcome.
