Alms & Legs

04 January 2026

10.00 to 14.00

Step back through the centuries with Alms and Legs, a pilgrimage-inspired 5.5 mile walk through the not-so-muddy, historic heart of Winchester.

We’ll follow part of the English Camino, tracing the footsteps of countless pilgrims who journeyed here before us.

We’ll start our Winchester ‘pilgrimage’ with a climb up the steps of St Catherine’s Hill, a former Iron Age fort and where the remains of the Chapel of St Catherine once drew medieval worshippers.

The views across Winchester offer the perfect spot for reflection at the start of our walk. Climbing the hill isn’t obligatory – it’s also possible to continue along the flat and meet the climbers at the Cadence Handlebar Cafe.

We will continue into Winchester and visit a couple of lesser-known, historic churches and pause to admire the exterior of the magnificent Cathedral, before following the crystal clear Itchen southwards to the Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Nobel Poverty.

Founded in the early 1100s, this is England’s oldest charitable institution in continuous use, having successfully managed to avoid destruction during the reformation.

It still retains some ancient traditions, including the giving out of the Wayfarer Dole – a small gift of bread and ale – to passing pilgrims, such as ourselves.

The Hospital itself is an incredible example of early Norman architecture, Our stop here will be towards the end of our walk, enabling the group to split, if necessary, into those who would like to pay to look inside and those who would like to return to their car.

Parking at Park & Ride in Winchester on a Sunday is free Hospital of St Cross – Adult £7.50 / Senior £5.00
