Stargazing Resources
We’ve collected together everything you could need to celebrate our starry skies and become Dark Sky Explorers!
Top Stargazing Apps
There are many great stargazing apps available. The one we use a lot is Stellarium, which has both web and mobile app versions. The free version works well, and you can pay to upgrade for some of the more detailed information.
Stargazing is hugely dependent on the weather and it is helpful to have several weather apps! We use the Met Office app and Clear Outside which is a weather app for astronomers.
If you are interested in aurora hunting, it is also helpful to have an app that tracks space weather. Again, there are many available and one I have found useful is the Glendale App. There are also many helpful Facebook groups.
If you use or find a stargazing app that you would recommend, please do get in touch – we would love to hear about them!

Seasonal Stargazing Guide

We’ve put together a handy guide to help you discover our dark skies throughout the year.
Walk the Planets
Check out our amazing ‘Walk the Planets’ experience! Originally created as an activity trail for our Dark Skies Festival ‘Stargazing Party’ events, these films take you on a journey through our solar system to help you discover more about our planetary neighbours.
You can watch or listen to the whole playlist on our YouTube channel – which planet is your favourite?

Dark Skies Explorers
Become a Dark Skies Explorer and join the Great Bear as she takes you on an awe-inspiring journey across the night sky, introducing you to some of her constellation friends and telling the fascinating stories behind the constellations.
