Sad news of our Barn Owl chicks

Sad news of our Barn Owl chicks

June 30, 2017

Yesterday we were shocked to see both remaining chicks motionless. After a couple of days of wet weather, the adults might have been unable to hunt due to their feathers not being waterproof. We hoped that by not moving they were preserving energy until the next meal came.

Unfortunately it seems that meal never came, we don’t know why, and sadly both chicks have now died.  We are now concerned for the adult female who would be doing most of the hunting.

We haven’t seen an adult returning to the box over the last couple of days. One has been seen hunting near to the nest box, but we are unsure whether this was the male or the female.

We would like to solve this mystery, so if you have been watching the webcam over the past few days and seen any activity, we would be very interested to know. Please email BarnOwl@southdowns.gov.uk if you can help at all.

Due to the upsetting nature of the live stream, we have decided to take it offline. We hope to watch another family’s journey in the future.
