Neighbourhood planning allows local communities to be more involved in planning for the places where you live, work or visit, including the services that directly affect your lives, by preparing:
- Neighbourhood Development Plans
- Neighbourhood Development Orders
- Community Right to Build Orders.
Through neighbourhood planning you can develop specific planning policies for your local area which cover local issues. These can be policies for individual sites or a wider area and can deal with just a handful of themes or topics, or cover a broad range of subjects. Traditionally local planning authorities undertake site allocation documents setting out how individual parcels of land will be used. You can now use neighbourhood planning to examine the role of sites, provided that the overall needs of the National Park and district are also met.
Neighbourhood planning gives a voice to a wide range of people in your community, hopefully creating more agreement for a long-term, planned approach and a sense of ownership. Where communities come together with sound working relationships, they not only stand a better chance of making plans happen they also develop a better understanding of how planning works but also gain other new skills and knowledge.
