Doug Jones named as new Member for South Downs National Park

Doug Jones has been appointed as a new Member for South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA).

 

Mr Jones first became a parish councillor in Buriton, East Hampshire, in 1999 and was selected to become an SDNPA Member in elections organised by the Hampshire Association of Local Councils. He will join the 26 other Members who are responsible for governing the National Park.

 

South Downs National Park Chair Margaret Paren said:

'We are delighted to welcome Doug Jones as the newest member of the South Downs National Park Authority. Doug has been an energetic member of the community in Buriton for many years and a longstanding supporter of the national park. He will bring many strengths to the authority.'

 

Mr Jones added:

‘I feel honoured to join the National Park Authority at this important time and I hope that my range of knowledge and experience will be helpful.’

 

Doug Jones replaces Minette Palmer who has recently stepped down from the role.

The South Downs National Park Authority has 27 Members, comprising:

  • 14 Councillors from Local Authorities within the South Downs National Park. There are 15 local authorities within the Park, and each is entitled to a seat on the Park Authority. Two councils have decided to share a seat.
  • 6 Councillors from Town and Parish Councils within the South Downs National Park. 2 councillors each are appointed from East Sussex, West Sussex and Hampshire. The appointments follow elections organized by the relevant Associations of Town and Parish Councils.
  • 7 Members appointed by the Secretary of State following a national, open competition.
